The maroon pointy hood, called a spathe, holds and protects the flower when it emerges out of the ground. Although they are known for their odor, I really couldn\u2019t smell them even though there were quite a few along the path.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/cut-leaved-toothwort.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-996\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/cut-leaved-toothwort.jpg?resize=563%2C949\" alt=\"cut-leaved toothwort\" width=\"563\" height=\"949\" \/><\/a>I have never noticed Cut-leaved Toothwort (<i>Cardamine concatenate<\/i>) before and was amazed how they seemed to be everywhere. How did I ever miss them? They get their name from their ivory colored roots as well as being used for toothaches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mertensia.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1000\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mertensia.jpg?resize=584%2C678\" alt=\"Mertensia\" width=\"584\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mertensia.jpg?w=778&amp;ssl=1 778w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mertensia.jpg?resize=258%2C300&amp;ssl=1 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Another new flower to me is Virginia Bluebells (<i>Mertensia virginica<\/i>). I love the delicate dark wine colored blossom. It looks almost black.
