I am so fortunate to live in an area where there are so many glorious trails and waterfalls to walk by. Monday through Friday, I drop Mathew off at school and then take a morning walk in the woods with Dylan. I am never disappointed as there is always something new to see. Yesterday was no exception.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fringed-Polygala.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1057\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fringed-Polygala.jpg?resize=584%2C668\" alt=\"Fringed Polygala\" width=\"584\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fringed-Polygala.jpg?w=686&amp;ssl=1 686w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Fringed-Polygala.jpg?resize=262%2C300&amp;ssl=1 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Aren\u2019t Fringed Polygala or Gaywings (<i>Polygala paucifolia<\/i>) the sweetest little things?! It always puts a smile on my face when I come across them.\u00a0 It is a small plant that likes to grow in mossy areas. The contrast between the green moss and pink flowers makes it a magical find.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1058\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine-1024x948.jpg?resize=584%2C540\" alt=\"columbine\" width=\"584\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?resize=1024%2C948&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?resize=300%2C277&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?resize=323%2C300&amp;ssl=1 323w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?w=2032&amp;ssl=1 2032w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?w=1168&amp;ssl=1 1168w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/columbine.jpg?w=1752&amp;ssl=1 1752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Wild columbine (<i>Aquilegia canadensis<\/i>) love growing in cracks in the rock along the gorge but they also do fine in gardens as well. The flower reminds me of Chinese lanterns. They are five-sectioned, yellow and red, horned flowers that hides its nectar in its long projections; this makes it inaccessible to all but the longest-tongued creatures. It appears that these beautiful flowers were designed with hummingbirds in mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Solomon-Seal.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1059\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Solomon-Seal.jpg?resize=584%2C445\" alt=\"Solomon Seal\" width=\"584\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Solomon-Seal.jpg?w=836&amp;ssl=1 836w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Solomon-Seal.jpg?resize=300%2C228&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Solomon-Seal.jpg?resize=393%2C300&amp;ssl=1 393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>I rarely ever come across Solomon\u2019s Seal (<em>Polygonatum <\/em>spp<em>.<\/em>) This one is a very interesting find as the flowers dangling below the stem is in singles, typical Solomon\u2019s Seal flowers dangle in pairs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Showy-Solomons-Seal.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1060\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Showy-Solomons-Seal.jpg?resize=584%2C468\" alt=\"Showy Solomon's Seal\" width=\"584\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Showy-Solomons-Seal.jpg?w=880&amp;ssl=1 880w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Showy-Solomons-Seal.jpg?resize=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Showy-Solomons-Seal.jpg?resize=374%2C300&amp;ssl=1 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>This one looks very similar to Solomon\u2019s seal but it has an erect flower at the end of its stem. Some call it False Solomon\u2019s Seal but I prefer Showy Solomon\u2019s Seal (<em>Smilacina racemosa<\/em>). When viewed from above, a slight zigzag of the stem between each leaf is noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>What have you seen on your walks?
