The saying, \u201cadapt or die,\u201d comes to mind but it makes more sense to me if I reword it \u201cadapt and thrive.\u201d It tends to resonate better for me, although I do indeed respect the original saying.<\/p>\n<p>There is no way I can digest and respond to what has been going on in our world right now, it is too over whelming to tackle but I can focus on a small piece of our lives. This year, I\u2019ve had very little time to focus on the natural world and harvesting herbs except for a couple of moments I stole here and there. With that said, Mike created a wonderful little nursery at our new home for some of my plant allies to move into.\u00a0 Although, they had a very late start, they do appear to be adapting to their new home and thriving beyond my expectations. Some are even to starting to flower in mid-October!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3078\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3078\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3078\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Arnica-2017-1024x497.jpg?resize=449%2C223\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>After I transplanted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2016\/07\/19\/gathering-arnica-blossoms\/\">Arnica (<em>Arnica<\/em> spp.),<\/a> it appeared to wither, so I decided to cut off the tops, hoping it would help it concentrate on establishing its roots. For a month, it looked dead, except for a little leaf here or there emerging from the soil. Now it appears that it has settled in and enjoys its new home. It is leafing out nicely, I would be surprised if it flowers this year, but I\u2019m looking forward to it spreading out in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3080\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3080\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ladys-Mantle-2017-1024x730.jpg?resize=440%2C316\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ladys-Mantle-2017.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ladys-Mantle-2017.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=440%2C316&amp;ssl=1 880w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ladys-Mantle-2017.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=440%2C316&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2015\/06\/24\/the-little-alchemist\/\">Lady\u2019s Mantle (<em>Alchemilla vulgaris<\/em>)<\/a> seemed to make itself at home instantaneously. I didn\u2019t have to provide much support except water during our dry periods.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3077\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3077\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3077\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/St-Johns-Wort-2017-1024x710.jpg?resize=435%2C305\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a>Three years ago, I transplanted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2012\/07\/12\/st-johns-wort-knows-how-to-relieve-the-pain\/\">St. John\u2019s Wort (<em>Hypericum perforatumin<\/em>)<\/a> to my old garden. It didn\u2019t come back until this spring, and it did robustly. I collected flowers daily until I moved some of it to our new nursery. It continued to send out flowers but I did not harvest any, allowing it to get acclimated to its new home. Well, it must like its new home, because it is now sending out fresh new aerial parts. I am mentally prepared to wait a couple of seasons before it revisits the nursery but hopeful that it will return next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3082\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3082\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3082\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Spearment-2017-1024x837.jpg?resize=401%2C330\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a>When I moved to a little cottage in the woods in 1998, I became enamored with Spearmint (<em>Mentha spicata<\/em>). It was growing right outside my front door. After a summer of adding it to my water, sun tea and random dishes, I couldn\u2019t imagine life without it. It really brightens up the day and I have been planting a little stem at each new home since. Spearmint is a rather vigorous plant, and you really don\u2019t need much for it to get established. Perhaps it was not prudent to put it into our nursery as our little plant is really thriving, but we can always find it a new home on the land next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3081\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3081\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3081\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/orange-calendula-820x1024.jpg?resize=366%2C455\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a>A dear friend gifted me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2016\/08\/30\/harvesting-calendula\/\">Calendula (<em>Calendula officinalis<\/em>)<\/a>\u00a0seeds and although they had a very slow start, they are now sending out lots of lovely orange blossoms. I am hoping they self-seed next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3079\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3079\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3079\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Echinachea-2017-1024x732.jpg?resize=395%2C285\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a>Although the new house\u2019s gardens had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2015\/08\/26\/preparing-for-flu-and-cold-season\/\">Echinacea (<em>Echinacea<\/em> spp.)<\/a> already, I needed to bring some with me. I cut the aerial parts so it could concentrate on establishing roots. I am overwhelmed that it is already sending out flowers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3087\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3087\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3087\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/yarrow-2017-1024x757.jpg?resize=395%2C296\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a>Mike was planting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2014\/04\/03\/first-herb-of-the-year\/\">Yarrow (<em>Achillea millefolium<\/em>)<\/a> seeds for his orchard garden, so I took a couple seedlings for the nursery. Besides its medicinal qualities, it\u2019s a great asset to any garden, as its root secretions will activate the disease resistance of nearby plants; and it intensifies the medicinal actions of other herbs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/?attachment_id=3083\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3083\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3083\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tulsi-801x1024.jpg?resize=396%2C504\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tulsi.jpg?resize=235%2C300&amp;ssl=1 235w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tulsi.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=396%2C504&amp;ssl=1 792w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tulsi.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=396%2C504&amp;ssl=1 1188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a>Mike also planted some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocimum_tenuiflorum\">Tulsi, a.k.a Holy Basil (<em>Ocimum tenuiflorum<\/em>)<\/a> seedlings that I transplanted into the garden, which has started to flower. I love how the bees\u2019 pollen sacs are bright red from visiting the Tulsi.<\/p>\n<p>Although, I didn\u2019t have much time to spend with herbs this year, I am overwhelmed with their ability to thrive in our little nursery.
