When I make candles, I use wax left over from old candles. I reuse\u00a0paper coffee cups or toilet paper rolls to make the candle molds . When creating\u00a0mosaics, I use shards from broken pottery. I love recycling and reusing. It makes my art more meaningful to me.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite things to make is paper. In fact, we made our wedding invitation from handmade paper. At the time I was lucky to be working with an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americorps.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\"> AmeriCorps<\/a> member who was stationed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wsworkshop.org\/studios\/facilities\/papermaking-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Woman\u2019s Studio Workshop<\/a>, which has a wonderful\u00a0paper making\u00a0studio. Stacy was very patient, but also a perfectionist. She helped me make beautiful wedding invitations and some extra pieces that I later made into our<a href=\"http:\/\/theketubah.com\/questions\/what-is-a-ketubah.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Ketubah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew has also become enthusiastic about\u00a0paper making\u00a0as well. Last week we started to make some paper for valentines. Scoop the deckle down into the slurry towards the bottom of the tub at a 45\u00b0 angle, totally submerging it. Slowly lift the deckle out of the water allowing the water to drain out (back into the tub) for about a minute. This may take some practice, no worries the paper is very forgiving.\n<p><div id=\"attachment_798\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-798\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-798\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper-300x220.jpg?resize=300%2C220\" alt=\"pulling paper\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg?resize=1024%2C752&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg?resize=408%2C300&amp;ssl=1 408w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg?w=1273&amp;ssl=1 1273w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/pulling-paper.jpg?w=1168&amp;ssl=1 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">pulling paper<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>If you do not like how it came out, simply turn the deckle over and \u201ckiss\u201d or touch the screen to the slurry, all the paper will go back into the slurry.<\/li>\n<li>Each time you put the deckle into the slurry make sure to mix the slurry again to disperse the fibers evenly.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have \u201cpulled\u201d a good sheet, cover the top of the deckle with old newspaper and flip quickly and lay the newspaper\/handmade paper\/deckle (in that order) on flat surface<\/li>\n<li>Start to tap screen so the handmade paper releases from screen onto old newspaper and slowly pull one side of the deckle away from handmade paper.<\/li>\n<li>Gently lay sponge on handmade paper and push with a flat level hand to absorb water.
