There\u2019s a little voice in the back of my head telling me that if I\u2019m not out there every day checking out the changes, they will happen without me. Which is true \u2013 life happens whether you witness it or not. Every spring you will find me out there checking out what flowers are blooming \u2013 it is so exciting.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I took a walk along Upper Buttermilk Falls. Even though, I was there 2 days prior, so many new wonderful blossoms had opened up since my last visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/red-trillium.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1001\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/red-trillium.jpg?resize=432%2C618\" alt=\"red trillium\" width=\"432\" height=\"618\" \/><\/a>The Red Trillium (<i>Trillium erectum<\/i>) has a few names. It is called &#8220;Birthroot&#8221; because tea brewed from the roots will induce labor. It\u2019s hard to believe that this lovely flower is also called &#8220;Stinking Benjamin&#8221; which refers to the flower&#8217;s unpleasant odor, but pollinators love them. Even though they grow abundantly in some areas, Red trillium is listed on New York State&#8217;s Protected Native Plant List.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trailing-arbutus.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2258\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trailing-arbutus.jpg?resize=460%2C438\" alt=\"trailing arbutus\" width=\"460\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trailing-arbutus.jpg?w=1020&amp;ssl=1 1020w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trailing-arbutus.jpg?resize=300%2C285&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trailing-arbutus.jpg?resize=316%2C300&amp;ssl=1 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a>It is always a treat to come across Trailing Arbutus (<i>Epigaea repens<\/i>). It is not a very a showing flower and tends to creep and hide along rocks and mosses. It is also known as the Plymouth Mayflower as it was supposedly the first flower to brighten the hearts of the Pilgrims after their first long cold New England winter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wild-ginger.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1013\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wild-ginger.jpg?resize=584%2C353\" alt=\"wild ginger\" width=\"584\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wild-ginger.jpg?w=978&amp;ssl=1 978w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wild-ginger.jpg?resize=300%2C181&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wild-ginger.jpg?resize=496%2C300&amp;ssl=1 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Plain and simple I love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/2012\/12\/13\/ginger-the-super-root-of-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">ginger<\/a>. So, when I come across Wild Ginger (<i>Asarum caudatum<\/i>) I am thrilled. Notice how the maroon flower blooms under the leaves, close to the ground. It is such an understated plant that packs a lot of flavor and healing qualities. Although I am a forager, I have not harvested any Wild Ginger for our meals &#8211; yet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Wild-Geranium.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1012\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Wild-Geranium.jpg?resize=401%2C389\" alt=\"Wild Geranium\" width=\"401\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Wild-Geranium.jpg?w=692&amp;ssl=1 692w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Wild-Geranium.jpg?resize=300%2C291&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.knowyouroots.com\/ijustgottashare\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Wild-Geranium.jpg?resize=308%2C300&amp;ssl=1 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a>Wild Geranium (<i>Geranium maculatum<\/i>) has a lovely little pale pink flower.
