Sleep through the night, even if someone has a cough.

During the winter, someone inevitably develops a cough, which tends to keep them and others up during the night. We generally take a spoonful of honey to help sleep through the night but some coughs prove stronger than our honey remedy. Several years ago, I heard about a crazy remedy that really works. The magical remedy is – GARLIC OIL rubbed on the soles of the feet. Yes, you heard me right. And, it is so simple, you have to try it next time you or someone has a cough.

Our little jar of garlic oil

Cough Remedy Recipe

  • Chop up several large cloves of garlic
  • Add garlic and olive oil to a small clean jar and cover
  • Let sit for at least an hour, the longer the better
  • Rub some garlic oil on the soles of the cougher’s feet (use about the size of a nickel); perhaps focus some attention on the areas just below the toes as it is connected to the lungs. Garlic enters your system and heads straight for the lungs. To prove the connection – simply take a piece of garlic out of the jar and place it between your toes, sleep, and you will wake up with garlic breathe – crazy but true. Please do not put garlic straight onto a little one’s foot as their skin is much more sensitive and the garlic may burn them, garlic oil is okay though.
  • Put on socks to protect the linens
  • Sleep soundly

Garlic oil is a safe remedy that I have used on myself and family members. One night, Mathew was sleeping through his coughs but keeping everyone else up, so I actually applied the oil and put socks on him while he was sleeping and voila! Peace and quiet.

Many people eat garlic for its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, immune boosting, blood pressure and cholesterol lowering properties. Garlic is a great soldier in fighting all bronchial infections. It is also known to kill antibiotic resistant bacteria. Garlic really is fantastic. And most of all, it tastes really good in most dishes.

What a difference a two-way zipper can make

Over 25 years ago, I vividly remember my older brother showing me his new winter jacket from LL Bean. It had a special feature that he was very excited about ~ a two-way zipper. I never saw one before and was intrigued. The coat was rather long, past his butt, but when he sat in his car, he didn’t have to unzip the entire jacket to get comfortable, he simply unzipped several inches from the bottom up to make it very easy to sit in the car.  It is an excellent feature during the cold winter months in the Northeast. Funny, but after that show-n-tell, I never gave it another thought, even though most of my jackets had the same feature. Well folks, after over two decades of wearing shell jackets I finally used my two-way zipper, and let me tell you ~ it was so liberating! I cannot believe I never tried it before.

In the winter, I am a layerer. With the temperature dropping below 20°F, I tend to get very bundled up, so when I need something from my jean’s pocket or to sit down, unzipping and then zipping up my entire coat is such a hassle. But no more! I simply unzip from the bottom and voilà easy access and comfort! So, you may be wondering why I never used this feature before ~ me too. Perhaps, my middle-aged body doesn’t fit as well in my clothes as it used to. Or better yet, I need and am wearing more layers. Yeah, sure, that’s it; I wear more layers when I go out nowadays. Beyond the shirt and turtleneck, there is a fleece or wool sweater, and then a fleece jacket and finally the shell. It really doesn’t matter the reason, because I have now my two-way zipper to use now and again.

What features do you love in your clothes? Could it be pit zips? There is nothing like hiking in the rain and being able to stay dry and still well ventilated is there? Please share and I will continue to share.
